1.Anatomy
The parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands located near or behind the thyroid gland in the neck, and they are responsible for regulating calcium levels in the blood through the production of parathyroid hormone (PTH).
2.Medical necessity of Procedure
The surgery is usually performed when one or more of the parathyroid glands are overactive, a condition known as hyperparathyroidism.
Overactive parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone, which can lead to high levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia). This can cause various health issues, such as:
-
Osteoporosis (bone thinning)
-
Kidney stones
